“The most defining moments of life leave a myriad of brushstrokes on our souls. My art attempts to capture and honor those moments.”
James Watson’s art reflects a deep appreciation of history and the emotional human condition. An avid traveler, James has had the opportunity to explore many cultures ranging from the Native Americans of the American West to the exotic pirate descendants of La Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean.
“There is a sense of nobility in indigenous peoples all over the world that transcends race and culture. It manifests itself through the eyes, regardless of their shape or color. This is the most beautiful element of humanity. When I can capture some small aspect of this I have found success.”
Historical paintings hold a special fascination and require intensive research.
“If I am painting the crusaders battling for Jerusalem, or a Navaho medicine man in his holy place for example, I need to go there, touch the dirt, experience the light, and above all listen. These places have spirits who will talk to you.”
James’ travels have taken him to the Forbidden City and Great Wall of China, the ancient roman city of Caesarea in Israel, Petra, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, and most of Europe.
His work can be found in collections throughout the world including: Australia, France, Japan, Mexico and the United States.
